Understanding Anxiety
Anxiety is a normal and customary reaction to stressful situations. But it can develop into a condition that can be debilitating and cause considerable distress. Symptoms of this type of anxiety include excessive worry, restlessness, fatigue, difficulty concentrating, irritability, muscle tension, panic attacks and sleep disorders. When extreme it can become the source of dysfunction both in the workplace and in your private life.
Anxiety can be associated with, or caused by, real life difficulties. But it is often caused by the habit of negative anticipation, which is extreme concern about things that probably will never happen. If it did happen, then you would find a way to deal with whatever it is at that time. Negatively anticipating will not and cannot prevent bad things from happening. Negatively anticipating is very different to forward planning or attempting to prevent life’s difficulties. All these actions contain agency. Negative anticipation on the other hand, just eats away at you, consumes you, and causes worry and anxiety with little accomplished by you, except perhaps, despair and anguish. I like to call this ‘The What Ifs’.
However, it is important to understand that anxiety is a real and valid mental health condition, and seeking help is taking positive steps towards recovery.
Why Seek Psychotherapy or Counselling from NWLPC for Anxiety?
Psychotherapy and Counselling provide a safe, confidential space in which to explore your feelings, thoughts, and behaviours. Therapy helps you to understand the root causes of your anxiety and to develop strategies and practical tools that will help to change your approach to life in order to manage, contain, and overcome your anxiety. NWLPC therapists are trained to guide you through this process, by offering support, empathy, and techniques to deal with this, often debilitating, condition.
The Importance of choosing the correct Therapist
When choosing a psychotherist or counsellor for anxiety it is essential to find a person who is experienced in working with this condition and with whom you feel comfortable and supported.
At NWLPC we suggest an initial consultation with one of our senior psychotherapists. You will have the opportunity to discuss the issues you are facing; the frequency and form of your therapy; and the counsellor or therapist who will best address your individual needs. You can ask any questions you have about the process and practicalities of being in therapy and decide whether individual, couple or group therapy is most suitable for you.
Conclusion
Anxiety is a common, debilitating, yet manageable condition. With the correct therapeutic support and help, you can develop the skills needed to challenge your anxiety and take back control your life
